BERT
Also written as RoBERTa, DistilBERT, Sentence-BERT, SBERT, Encoder Models
A Google language model from 2018 that reads a whole sentence at once to understand each word in context. Unlike chat models it doesn't write text; it's used for classifying text, picking out names and entities, and search. Smaller versions such as DistilBERT are still widely used because they're cheap and fast.
Think of it like
A sharp reader who understands what they read, but doesn't write essays.
Junior or senior?
Common on NLP resumes, especially from before the LLM wave.
Senior sounds like
Has fine-tuned one on their own labelled data and can say when it beat a large LLM on cost or speed.
Ask them
“What did you fine-tune BERT for, how much labelled data did you have, and why not use an LLM instead?”
Reading BERT on a resume
- Table-stakes
- Most people in this field list BERT, so its presence tells you little, and opening a screen with it can make the call sound junior. Ask what they built with it instead.
- Around since 2018
- Nobody can have more years of BERT than it has existed. A job description asking for more was probably copied without checking — worth raising with the hiring manager.
Sourcing for BERT
Every way it's written

Wider net, with accepted substitutes
("BERT" OR "RoBERTa" OR "DistilBERT" OR "Sentence-BERT" OR "SBERT" OR "Encoder Models")Includes skills a hiring manager would usually accept instead. Use it when the exact search runs dry.
