BGP / OSPF

Also written as BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, Border Gateway Protocol, Open Shortest Path First, Routing Protocols, Dynamic Routing

Routing protocols: the rules routers use to tell each other which paths exist, so traffic finds its way automatically. OSPF and EIGRP (Cisco's own) work inside one company's network; BGP connects separate networks, such as a company to its internet providers or to the cloud.

Think of it like

OSPF is a company's map of its own internal roads; BGP is the agreement between countries about which border crossing leads where.

Junior or senior?

OSPF is expected of mid-level network engineers. Hands-on BGP is a stronger signal: it runs at internet edges, between data centres and into the cloud, where one mistake can take a whole site offline.

Senior sounds like

Has designed or changed BGP routing with a provider or cloud.

Ask them

“Where did you use BGP: with an internet provider, between data centres, or into a cloud? What change did you make, and how did you make it safely?”

Reading BGP / OSPF on a resume

Common
BGP / OSPF narrows the field but doesn't prove depth on its own. The junior-versus-senior contrast above is what separates one candidate from another.

Nobody can have more years of BGP / OSPF than it has existed. A job description asking for more was probably copied without checking — worth raising with the hiring manager.

Where this talent works in India — Networking & IT Infrastructure

Target companies that build networking gear or run large networks and data centres themselves: equipment makers, telecom operators, data-centre operators and infrastructure-services firms. Help-desk-heavy outsourcing contracts use the same titles with far less design work, so ask who designed the network, not just who kept it running.

For example: Cisco, Juniper Networks (HPE), HPE Aruba Networking, Arista Networks, Extreme Networks, F5, Infoblox, Nokia.
