CNN / RNN / LSTM

Also written as CNN, Convolutional Neural Network, RNN, Recurrent Neural Network, LSTM, Long Short-Term Memory, GRU, GAN, Generative Adversarial Network

The classic deep learning model types from before transformers. CNNs (convolutional neural networks) are built for images; RNNs and their improved forms, LSTMs and GRUs, for sequences such as text, speech and time series; GANs generate images by pitting two networks against each other. Transformers have taken over much of this work, but CNNs and LSTMs are still widely used.

Think of it like

The specialist tools in a workshop from before the all-purpose power tool arrived: still the right choice for some jobs.

Junior or senior?

Common on data science resumes and interview syllabuses.

Senior sounds like

Has trained one on their own data and can say why they chose it over a transformer or a simpler model.

Ask them

“Which of these did you train on real data, for what problem, and why that type of model?”

Table-stakes
Most people in this field list CNN / RNN / LSTM, so its presence tells you little, and opening a screen with it can make the call sound junior. Ask what they built with it instead.

Where this talent works in India — AI & Machine Learning

Target companies with models in production and their own training or inference spend — hyperscaler AI teams, consumer platforms with ranking systems, and funded model startups. Analytics-only shops produce the job title without the delivery.
