WordPress
Also written as WooCommerce, WordPress Developer, Gutenberg
The most widely used website platform: a PHP content management system behind a large share of the web. WordPress developers build themes and plugins; WooCommerce turns it into an online shop.
Think of it like
A furnished flat you can redecorate: most of the building is ready, and the work is in themes (paint and furniture) and plugins (new appliances).
Junior or senior?
A real skill, but a different one from building apps.
Junior sounds like
Installs and configures themes and plugins.
Senior sounds like
Writes custom plugins and themes in PHP and keeps busy sites fast and secure.
Ask them
“Have you written a custom WordPress plugin or theme from scratch, and what did it need to do that existing ones couldn't?”
Reading WordPress on a resume
- Table-stakes
- Most people in this field list WordPress, so its presence tells you little, and opening a screen with it can make the call sound junior. Ask what they built with it instead.
- Around since 2003
- Nobody can have more years of WordPress than it has existed. A job description asking for more was probably copied without checking — worth raising with the hiring manager.
