Translate a Resume's Tech Stack Into Plain English

When to use it

The prompt

I'm a recruiter, not an engineer. Explain this candidate's technical background in plain English, against the role I'm hiring for. THE ROLE: {{Job Title}}, {{level}} OUR TEAM'S ACTUAL STACK: {{list it}} THE CANDIDATE'S TECHNICAL DETAIL: {{paste the skills section, project descriptions, or GitHub/portfolio summary}} Tell me: 1. What this person most likely does day to day, in two or three sentences, inferred only from what's written. 2. A table of their listed skills, each marked core to our role / transferable / not relevant here, with one line on why. 3. Which skills have a project or result attached and which are only listed, since those deserve very different weight. 4. Where their stack differs from ours, and how big the gap is to close: days, months, or a different career path. 5. Anything internally inconsistent — skills that rarely appear together, a timeline that doesn't fit — worth asking about rather than assuming. 6. Two screening questions that would tell me whether the core skills are hands-on or second-hand. Don't infer skill level from company names or job titles alone, and say so when the resume doesn't give you enough to tell.

Tip

Paste the same text into the glossary's Decode tab first for definitions of the individual terms. Then use this prompt for the bigger-picture read on how those skills fit together and how far they are from your stack.

How to use it

Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
