Agentic Coding Tools

Also written as Agentic Coding, Coding Agent, AI Coding Agent, Claude Code, Codex CLI

AI tools that take a whole task, such as 'fix this bug' or 'add this feature', and carry it out across the codebase: reading files, editing code, running tests and trying again when something fails. A step beyond autocomplete-style assistants like Copilot, which suggest code a line or block at a time.

Think of it like

Handing a contractor a job and inspecting the finished work, rather than having someone suggest the next brick while you lay it.

Junior or senior?

Widely used by developers now, so using one isn't a differentiator; how someone works with it is.

Senior sounds like

Describes how they break work down for the agent, review what it produces, and limit what it may change or run.

Ask them

“Walk me through the last real task you gave a coding agent. What did you check before its changes were merged?”

Sounds like real experience

Describes a specific task, how they scoped it, a mistake the agent made, and the review or tests that caught it.

Probe further if

Describes the tool's features in general terms, or suggests its output doesn't need checking.
