Chef / Puppet
Also written as Chef, Puppet, SaltStack, Configuration Management
Configuration-management tools that keep large fleets of servers set up identically — the same software, settings and users on every machine — by describing the desired state in code. Widely used in the 2010s. Many teams have since moved to Ansible, containers and Kubernetes, but they still run in large enterprises and banks.
Think of it like
A house-style rulebook every branch must match, with an inspector who visits regularly and puts back anything that has drifted.
Junior or senior?
A sign of the pre-container era of operations. Valuable for roles maintaining existing estates or migrating off them.
Senior sounds like
Has led a migration away from them, or can explain why their organisation kept them.
Ask them
“Is that environment still running Chef or Puppet today? If you moved off it, what did you move to and why?”
