Dimensional Modeling

Also written as Star Schema, Snowflake Schema, Kimball, Fact Table, Dimension Table

A way of arranging warehouse tables for reporting: a central 'fact' table of events or transactions (orders, clicks) surrounded by 'dimension' tables that describe them (customer, product, date). The layout is called a star schema. It comes from Ralph Kimball's methodology and is still how most analytics tables are designed.

Think of it like

A till receipt (the fact) that points to separate cards describing the shop, the customer and each product (the dimensions).

Junior or senior?

The core skill that separates an analytics engineer from someone who writes queries.

Senior sounds like

Can talk about grain (what one row means) and how they handled changing dimensions such as a customer moving region.

Ask them

“In a model you designed, what did one row of the main fact table represent, and why did you choose that?”
