Function Calling

Also written as Tool Use, Tool Calling

A capability that lets an AI model request that a specific piece of code (a 'tool' or 'function') be run on its behalf — like looking up a database or calling an API — instead of only generating text.

Think of it like

Like a smart assistant who, instead of just describing how to look something up, actually picks up the phone and looks it up for you, then reports back.

Junior or senior?

Junior sounds like

Has only built the happy-path function-calling demo.

Senior sounds like

Has handled the model calling the wrong tool, or with bad arguments, and can describe what they did about it.

Ask them

“What did you do when the model called a tool with the wrong arguments, or a tool it shouldn't have?”
