Data Lakehouse

Also written as Lakehouse, Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg, Iceberg, Apache Hudi

A data platform that keeps raw files in cheap cloud storage (like a data lake) but adds a table layer on top so they can be queried, updated and governed like a data warehouse. Delta Lake, Apache Iceberg and Apache Hudi are the table formats that make this work.

Think of it like

A self-storage unit that also keeps a proper inventory list, so you can find and update any box without unpacking the whole unit.

Junior or senior?

Junior sounds like

Has queried tables that happen to be Delta or Iceberg.

Senior sounds like

Can explain why their team picked a lakehouse over a warehouse like Snowflake, and has dealt with table maintenance such as compaction, schema changes and time travel.

Ask them

“Why did your team go with a lakehouse rather than a traditional warehouse, and what did you have to maintain yourselves as a result?”

Sounds like real experience

Names a concrete reason (cost at their data volume, sharing data between Spark and SQL tools, avoiding lock-in) and a maintenance chore they actually owned.

Probe further if

Uses 'lakehouse' as a synonym for 'we used Databricks' and can't say what the table format did for them.
