VLAN
Also written as Virtual LAN, 802.1Q, VLAN Trunking, Inter-VLAN Routing, Spanning Tree, Spanning Tree Protocol
A way to split one physical network into separate virtual networks, so staff, guests, cameras and servers share the same switches without seeing each other's traffic. Trunks carry several VLANs over one cable, and Spanning Tree stops traffic looping endlessly between switches.
Think of it like
Coloured lanes on one road: everyone uses the same tarmac, but each colour only leads to its own exits.
Junior or senior?
A basic skill every network engineer lists.
Senior sounds like
Has designed the VLAN layout for a site, or fixed a loop or wrongly tagged trunk that took a network down.
Ask them
“How did you decide which VLANs a site needed, and what's the worst VLAN or trunk problem you've fixed?”
Reading VLAN on a resume
- Table-stakes
- Most people in this field list VLAN, so its presence tells you little, and opening a screen with it can make the call sound junior. Ask what they built with it instead.

Where this talent works in India — Networking & IT Infrastructure
Target companies that build networking gear or run large networks and data centres themselves: equipment makers, telecom operators, data-centre operators and infrastructure-services firms. Help-desk-heavy outsourcing contracts use the same titles with far less design work, so ask who designed the network, not just who kept it running.
For example: Cisco, Juniper Networks (HPE), HPE Aruba Networking, Arista Networks, Extreme Networks, F5, Infoblox, Nokia.
