VMware vSphere
Also written as VMware, vSphere, ESXi, VMware ESXi, vCenter, VMware vCenter, vMotion
The leading platform for running many virtual servers on each physical server in a company's own data centre. ESXi is the software on each server, vCenter manages them all, and vMotion moves a running virtual machine between servers. Since Broadcom bought VMware in 2023 and changed its licensing, many companies are weighing a move to other platforms or the cloud.
Think of it like
The property manager for a whole estate of flats: it decides which building each tenant lives in, and can move them between buildings without disturbing them.
Junior or senior?
Junior sounds like
Creates and monitors virtual machines.
Senior sounds like
Has designed clusters, planned capacity, run upgrades, or led a migration off VMware. VCP is VMware's own certification.
Ask them
“How many hosts and virtual machines did you manage, and have you been part of a migration onto or off VMware?”
Reading VMware vSphere on a resume
- Common
- VMware vSphere narrows the field but doesn't prove depth on its own. The junior-versus-senior contrast above is what separates one candidate from another.
- Around since 2001
- Nobody can have more years of VMware vSphere than it has existed. A job description asking for more was probably copied without checking — worth raising with the hiring manager.

Where this talent works in India — Networking & IT Infrastructure
Target companies that build networking gear or run large networks and data centres themselves: equipment makers, telecom operators, data-centre operators and infrastructure-services firms. Help-desk-heavy outsourcing contracts use the same titles with far less design work, so ask who designed the network, not just who kept it running.
For example: Cisco, Juniper Networks (HPE), HPE Aruba Networking, Arista Networks, Extreme Networks, F5, Infoblox, Nokia.
