ITIL vs. ServiceNow

New

How to tell them apart on a resume

ITIL (the practices)

ITIL Foundation or ITIL 4, incident and problem management, change advisory board (CAB), SLAs, service desk processes, process owner or manager roles.

ServiceNow (the platform)

ServiceNow admin or developer, catalogue items, workflows, business rules, GlideRecord, CSA or CAD certification, integrations.

The question that settles it

“Have you designed or run IT processes like incident and change management, or configured and built on the ServiceNow platform itself?”

Each term in plain English

  • ITIL

The most widely used set of good practices for running IT services: how incidents are logged and resolved, how recurring problems are traced to a root cause, and how changes are approved before they reach live systems.

Ask “Give me an example of an incident that turned into a problem record. What was the root cause, and how was it fixed for good?”

  • ServiceNow

A cloud platform companies use to run IT support and internal workflows such as tickets, change requests, asset tracking and HR requests.

Ask “Did you configure ServiceNow, build on it, or use it day to day? Tell me about something you built or changed in it.”

  • ServiceNow ITSM / ITOM / HRSD

ServiceNow's product areas, each with its own data, workflows and specialists: ITSM for IT tickets and changes, ITOM for discovering and monitoring infrastructure, HRSD for employee HR requests, CSM for customer service, plus security, risk (GRC) and project-portfolio modules.

Ask “Which ServiceNow modules have you implemented or supported, and which did you set up from scratch?”
