SAP Functional vs. SAP Technical
'SAP experience' covers two separate careers. Functional consultants configure SAP to match business processes in a module (FI/CO for finance, MM for procurement, SD for sales) and usually come from a business or accounting background. Technical consultants write ABAP code, build integrations and handle data migration. Few people are strong at both, and a JD that just says 'SAP' needs clarifying before you search.
How to tell them apart on a resume
Functional
Module codes (FI/CO, MM, SD, PP), business process design, requirements workshops, configuration, go-live support.
Technical
ABAP, BAPIs, IDocs, OData, CDS views, SAP BTP, integrations, data migration scripts.
The question that settles it
“Was your SAP work configuring business processes in a module, or writing ABAP and building integrations?”
