Explain Contract, Contract-to-Hire and Permanent
When to use it
Compare a day rate with a salary honestly, for a candidate weighing the two.
The prompt
Help me explain the difference between a contract and a permanent offer to a candidate for {{Job Title}} in {{country}}. THE CONTRACT OPTION: {{day rate, length, the local employment-status classification, umbrella or direct, how likely an extension is}} THE PERMANENT OPTION: {{salary, bonus, equity, benefits, pension}} WHAT THE CANDIDATE IS OPTIMISING FOR: {{money now, stability, visa or mortgage requirements, variety}} WHAT THE CLIENT ACTUALLY WANTS: {{a fixed piece of work, or a permanent hire routed through a contract}} Give me: 1. A like-for-like comparison, converting the day rate to an annual figure with utilisation, unpaid holiday, sick leave, pension and employer costs each shown on their own line. 2. The assumptions behind that conversion, listed so the candidate can argue with them. 3. What the contract genuinely doesn't include, stated plainly rather than as a caveat at the end. 4. Who each option actually suits, including the cases where contract is the better choice. 5. The questions the candidate should ask before accepting the contract, especially about extension and notice. 6. Anything here that depends on {{country}} tax or employment rules and needs checking rather than assuming. Treat this as general guidance, not tax or legal advice.
Tip
Convert the day rate honestly, with unpaid holiday and employer costs on their own lines. A candidate who later works out that your comparison was flattering will assume every other number you gave them was too.
How to use it
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
