Make the Internal Case for an Off-Band Offer
When to use it
Get an exception approved for a candidate worth it, with an argument that survives the internal-equity objection.
The prompt
Help me build the internal case for an offer above our band for a {{Job Title}} candidate. THE BAND: {{range and level}} WHAT THEY WANT: {{their number, and what they've said about it}} WHY THEY'RE WORTH IT: {{specific evidence from the process — what they can do that the rest of the pipeline can't}} THE REST OF THE PIPELINE: {{honestly — is there a viable alternative, and how far behind is it}} WHAT THE ROLE HAS COST US SO FAR: {{weeks open, agency fees, work not getting done}} WHO APPROVES THIS: {{comp partner, finance, the exec team}} WHAT PEOPLE ALREADY ON THE TEAM EARN: {{if you know}} Write a case that: 1. Leads with the cost of not hiring, quantified where honest and flagged where it isn't. 2. States the evidence for this specific person, drawn from the process rather than from enthusiasm. 3. Meets the internal-equity objection head-on rather than hoping it doesn't come up — including what we'd do if this hire's number gets out. 4. Offers the alternatives to a base increase: sign-on, extra equity, an early review, a level change — with what each costs and what it signals. 5. Says plainly what we do if it's declined. Then tell me the strongest argument against my own case, and whether I should be making it at all.
Tip
Assume the number becomes known. Compensation always leaks eventually, and an exception you can't defend to the person already doing the job is a retention problem you've bought in exchange for one hire.
How to use it
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
