Design a Take-Home Skills Assessment

When to use it

The prompt

Design a take-home assessment for a {{Job Title}} role at {{level}} that a candidate can finish in {{X hours}} or less. WHAT IT NEEDS TO TEST: {{the 1-3 real skills or judgment calls that matter most for this role, not a checklist of every tool}} WHAT THE WORK ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE: {{a real, non-confidential example of a problem this team solves}} OUR POLICY ON AI USE: {{allowed / allowed if disclosed / not allowed}} WHO REVIEWS SUBMISSIONS: {{and how much time they have per submission}} Give me: 1. The exercise as candidate-facing instructions: the scenario, what to submit, the time box, and what we will and won't judge. 2. A scoring rubric with 3-4 criteria and what a strong, acceptable and weak submission looks like for each. 3. One explicit "you do NOT need to" line, so nobody over-invests to impress us. 4. A built-in decision point with no single right answer, so the submission shows judgment rather than just output. 5. A 20-30 minute follow-up discussion plan where the candidate walks us through their choices. 6. Your honest estimate of how long a competent candidate will really take, compared with my time box. 7. Anything that makes this feel like unpaid work on our real product, and how to change it.

Tip

Ask for the honest time estimate and believe it. Take-homes routinely run to double their stated time, and the candidates with the most options are the first to decline one that looks open-ended.

How to use it

Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
