Map the Talent Market for a Role
When to use it
Get a realistic read on whether the talent you have been asked to find actually exists in the place you have been asked to find it.
The prompt
Act as a talent market researcher. Give me a realistic picture of the market for this role, and be clear about which parts are estimates. ROLE: {{Job Title}}, {{level}} LOCATION / WORK MODEL: {{city, region, remote within which countries, or hybrid with N days on site}} MUST-HAVE SKILLS: {{the genuine non-negotiables}} BUDGET: {{comp range, if you can share it}} DATA I ALREADY HAVE: {{e.g. LinkedIn Recruiter result counts for my search, Talent Insights figures, response rates so far, offers lost and why}} Start by saying how current your knowledge of this market is likely to be. Then tell me: 1. Roughly how deep this pool is, as a range with your reasoning, and what makes it deeper or shallower than it looks. If I gave you search counts, work from those rather than your own estimate. 2. Which of my must-haves is doing the most damage to pool size, and a substitute requirement that tests the same thing. 3. The adjacent backgrounds worth targeting — people without the exact title who could do this job — and what to look for on their resumes. 4. Where the competition for these people comes from, by company type rather than by name, and what those employers offer that we'd have to answer. 5. How much the pool changes if we widen the location or work model, and which single widening is worth the most. 6. An honest verdict: is this role hard, very hard, or effectively unfillable at this comp and location, and what single change would most improve it. 7. The two numbers I should check myself before I quote any of this to a hiring manager. Don't present a pool-size estimate as fact. Label every number as either from my data or your estimate.
Tip
Bring the answer to intake, not to your own head. 'Dropping the Kubernetes requirement roughly doubles the pool' is a conversation with a hiring manager; 'this is hard' is a complaint.
How to use it
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
