Overwhelming a service with traffic from many machines at once so real users cannot get through. The goal is unavailability, not theft.
Think of it like
Thousands of people crowding a shop doorway. Nothing is stolen, and no customer can get in.
Junior or senior?
Usually handled by a CDN or web application firewall rather than by application code.

Has been on an incident and can describe telling attack traffic from a genuine surge.

“How would you tell a denial-of-service attack apart from unexpectedly successful marketing?”
