Perl
An older scripting language that was once the standard tool for processing text, writing system-administration scripts and building early websites. Largely replaced by Python, but still found in telecoms, bioinformatics, banks and long-running Unix systems.
Think of it like
A Swiss Army knife from the 1990s: still sharp, but most people now carry a newer one.
Junior or senior?
On a recent resume it usually means maintaining older systems — valuable for roles that look after or migrate them.
Senior sounds like
Has maintained a large Perl codebase or migrated one to another language.
Ask them
“Is the Perl you worked on still running? What did you do to make it easier for the next person to maintain?”
