Design Verification (DV) Engineer
NewProves a chip design works before it is manufactured — UVM testbenches in SystemVerilog, regression runs and coverage closure. Tests the RTL rather than writing it, much as an SDET tests software.
Credible resume terms
Terms that should plausibly appear on a real Design Verification (DV) Engineer resume. “Must-have” marks the ones whose total absence is a genuine red flag.
- Design Verification (UVM)Must-have
Proving a chip design works before it's manufactured, by building simulated test environments that throw millions of scenarios at it.
- Verilog / SystemVerilog / VHDLMust-have
Languages for describing digital chip circuits rather than writing software: engineers describe how a circuit behaves, and tools turn that into real logic gates.
- VLSI / ASIC DesignMust-have
Designing custom computer chips (ASICs and systems-on-chip) with millions or billions of transistors.
- RTL Design
The front-end chip design step: writing a circuit's behaviour at register-transfer level in Verilog or VHDL, defining how data moves between registers on each clock cycle.
- Regression Testing
Re-running existing tests after a code change to make sure nothing that used to work has broken.
- Test Coverage
A metric showing what percentage of a codebase is exercised by automated tests.
- Test Strategy
The high-level plan for how a product or team is tested: which kinds of testing, what's automated versus manual, which environments, and the quality bar a release must meet.
- C++
A high-performance, low-level language giving direct control over memory, widely used in game engines, embedded systems, high-frequency trading, and other places where speed and control matter more than developer convenience.
- Python
A widely used programming language known for readability, popular for backend development, data science, and machine learning.
- Perl
An older scripting language that was once the standard tool for processing text, writing system-administration scripts and building early websites.
- Linux
An open-source operating system that runs the vast majority of servers, cloud infrastructure, and containers — comfort with its command line is assumed baseline for most backend and DevOps work, even when the day-to-day IDE is on Windows or Mac.
- Git
The standard tool for tracking changes to code over time and enabling multiple people to collaborate on the same codebase without overwriting each other's work.
Design Verification (DV) Engineer: screening questions
One question per core skill, must-haves first. Each term’s page shows what a junior and a senior answer sound like.
Design Verification (UVM)
“Did you build the UVM testbench yourself or add to an existing one, and how did you decide coverage was complete?”
VLSI / ASIC Design
“Which part of the chip flow did you own, and did your block make it to tape-out?”
Verilog / SystemVerilog / VHDL
“What block did you design in Verilog or VHDL, and what problem only showed up after synthesis?”
RTL Design
“Did you write the micro-architecture for your block, or code to someone else's? What trade-off did you make?”
Test Coverage
“Has high test coverage ever given your team false confidence? What slipped through anyway?”
Adjacent, but not real signal
These read as related, but they don’t tell you this candidate can do this job — they usually belong to one of the roles below.
- Selenium / Cypress / Playwright
Popular tools for automating browser-based end-to-end tests — Selenium is the oldest and most widely supported; Cypress and Playwright are newer and generally faster/easier to write tests in.
- Physical Design
The back-end chip design step: turning the verified design into a physical layout by placing millions of cells, routing the wires, and checking timing (static timing analysis), power and manufacturing rules before tape-out.
- Embedded Systems
Software written for a dedicated device rather than a general-purpose computer: a car's braking unit, a pacemaker, a thermostat, a router.
Most often confused with
- VLSI Design Engineer
Designs the logic inside a chip — RTL in Verilog or SystemVerilog that becomes an ASIC or runs on an FPGA. Indian JDs often call this front-end design; physical design (layout and timing) is a separate back-end role.
- QA Automation Engineer
Writes and maintains the automated test suites that replace manual click-through testing — heavy on test tooling, lighter on production application code than an SDET.
