The Composable Architecture
Also written as TCA, Swift Composable Architecture
An open-source Swift library from Point-Free (2020) for structuring iOS apps, especially SwiftUI apps. All of a feature's state and logic live in one place, changes happen through clearly named actions, and features can be tested step by step. Admired for testability, but has a steep learning curve and ties a codebase closely to one library.
Think of it like
A strict recipe-card system for a kitchen: every dish is written down exactly, so it's easy to check and repeat, but new cooks need time to learn the format.
Junior or senior?
A strong iOS signal, but also a big team commitment.
Senior sounds like
Can describe the trade-off — testability versus learning curve and dependence on one library — and how they onboarded new developers to it.
Ask them
“What did TCA make easier on your team, and what did new iOS developers struggle with when they joined?”
Reading The Composable Architecture on a resume
- Common
- The Composable Architecture narrows the field but doesn't prove depth on its own. The junior-versus-senior contrast above is what separates one candidate from another.
- Around since 2020
- Nobody can have more years of The Composable Architecture than it has existed. A job description asking for more was probably copied without checking — worth raising with the hiring manager.
