Virtual DOM

Also written as VDOM

An in-memory copy of the page that React and Vue use to work out the smallest set of changes to make to the real page, since updating the real page directly is slow.

Think of it like

Marking up a photocopy of a document first, then making only the necessary corrections on the original.

Junior or senior?

A classic interview-prep term. Juniors recite the definition; seniors know it isn't free and that newer frameworks (Svelte, Solid) skip it entirely.

Ask them

“Why do some newer frameworks avoid a virtual DOM altogether?”
