Read a Resume That Was Written With AI
When to use it
Work out what a polished, AI-assisted resume is actually claiming, and what to ask to find out whether it's true.
The prompt
This resume reads as though it was drafted or heavily rewritten with AI. Help me work out what's underneath it. {{Paste the resume}} THE ROLE: {{Job Title}}, {{level}} THE JD: {{paste it, or just the must-haves}} Give me: 1. The claims specific enough to be checkable, separated from the ones that are fluent but say nothing. 2. Where the wording tracks my job description closely enough that it was probably mirrored back at me, and what the underlying experience might actually be. 3. Every achievement with a number in it, and what that number would have to mean for the claim to hold. 4. Three questions per claimed area that someone who did the work answers instantly and someone who didn't cannot. 5. What I should not hold against them: formatting, polish and phrasing are not evidence of anything, and plenty of strong candidates use these tools well. 6. What's conspicuously missing that a resume at this level would normally show. Do not guess whether AI was used, and don't score me a likelihood. That isn't knowable and isn't the point.
Tip
Never reject someone for using AI to write a resume, or you're screening for writing confidence rather than ability. Treat the polish as a reason to ask sharper questions and let the answers do the filtering.
How to use it
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
