Screen a Resume Against a JD
When to use it
Get a fast, structured first pass on resume fit before you read it properly yourself.
The prompt
Compare this resume against this job description. Rules: work only from what is written. Do not infer skills from a job title, a company name, a school, or a candidate's name. Where you're unsure, say so rather than filling the gap. JOB DESCRIPTION: {{Paste JD here}} RESUME: {{Paste resume here}} Give me: 1. A fit score from 1-5 with one sentence justifying it, plus how confident you are given how much the resume actually spells out. 2. The top 3 matching qualifications, quoting the resume rather than paraphrasing it. 3. The top 3 gaps — separating genuinely missing from simply not mentioned. Those need very different follow-ups from me. 4. Anything the resume implies but doesn't evidence: scope claims with no numbers, "led" with no team size, a tool listed with no project attached. 5. Two screening questions that would resolve the single biggest uncertainty. 6. One thing you'd want a technical interviewer to check that I can't assess myself. Do not comment on employment gaps, career breaks, or how long they stayed anywhere.
Tip
Sanity-check the fit score yourself every time. The model can only compare stated text — it cannot verify an accomplishment, catch a padded resume, or know that the candidate's last employer defined the title very differently from yours.
How to use it
Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
