CMDB

Also written as Configuration Management Database, ServiceNow Discovery, Service Mapping, BMC Helix Discovery

The database that lists a company's IT assets (servers, applications, network devices, cloud resources) and how they depend on each other. It tells support teams what breaks if a server goes down, and it is only useful if discovery tools keep it up to date.

Think of it like

A building's master floor plan with every pipe and cable drawn in: priceless in an emergency, useless if nobody updated it after the renovation.

Junior or senior?

Most CMDBs are out of date, so keeping one accurate is a real skill.

Senior sounds like

Has set up automated discovery, agreed who owns which data, and measured how accurate the CMDB was.

Ask them

“How did your team keep the CMDB accurate, and how did you know how accurate it was?”

Sounds like real experience

Describes discovery tools or imports that kept it current, who owned which records, and a measure they used, such as duplicate or stale items.

Probe further if

Their CMDB work was entering items by hand, or they can't say how anyone knew whether the data was right.

Reading CMDB on a resume

Common
CMDB narrows the field but doesn't prove depth on its own. The junior-versus-senior contrast above is what separates one candidate from another.

Don’t mix it up

  • Configuration Management: CMDB vs. Ansible vs. Version Control

The same phrase means three jobs. In IT service management, configuration management means keeping the CMDB, the record of which IT assets exist and how they depend on each other. In DevOps, it means tools such as Ansible, Puppet and Chef that set up servers automatically. In older software teams, software configuration management (SCM) means version control, builds and releases. A search for 'configuration management' brings back all three.
