Credible resume terms

Terms that should plausibly appear on a real ServiceNow Developer resume. “Must-have” marks the ones whose total absence is a genuine red flag.

  • ServiceNow

A cloud platform companies use to run IT support and internal workflows such as tickets, change requests, asset tracking and HR requests.

  • ServiceNow Scripting (GlideRecord)Must-have

Writing JavaScript inside ServiceNow to go beyond its point-and-click setup.

  • ServiceNow ITSM / ITOM / HRSDMust-have

ServiceNow's product areas, each with its own data, workflows and specialists: ITSM for IT tickets and changes, ITOM for discovering and monitoring infrastructure, HRSD for employee HR requests, CSM for customer service, plus security, risk (GRC) and project-portfolio modules.

  • CMDB

The database that lists a company's IT assets (servers, applications, network devices, cloud resources) and how they depend on each other.

  • ITIL

The most widely used set of good practices for running IT services: how incidents are logged and resolved, how recurring problems are traced to a root cause, and how changes are approved before they reach live systems.

  • ServiceNow Certifications (CSA, CAD, CIS)

ServiceNow's own exams: Certified System Administrator (CSA) for configuration, Certified Application Developer (CAD) for building on the platform, and Certified Implementation Specialist (CIS) exams for each module, such as CIS-ITSM.

  • JavaScriptMust-have

The core programming language of the web, used to make pages interactive; also runs on servers via Node.js.

  • REST API

A common style for designing web APIs around standard HTTP verbs (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE) and resource URLs.

  • OAuth

A standard protocol that lets users log into a third-party app using an existing account (e.g. 'Sign in with Google') without sharing their password.

ServiceNow Developer: screening questions

One question per core skill, must-haves first. Each term’s page shows what a junior and a senior answer sound like.

  1. ServiceNow Scripting (GlideRecord)

“Tell me about a script you wrote in ServiceNow. Why did it need code instead of Flow Designer, and did it cause trouble at upgrade time?”

  2. ServiceNow ITSM / ITOM / HRSD

“Which ServiceNow modules have you implemented or supported, and which did you set up from scratch?”

  3. JavaScript

“Tell me about a tricky bug involving asynchronous JavaScript.”

  4. ServiceNow

“Did you configure ServiceNow, build on it, or use it day to day? Tell me about something you built or changed in it.”

  5. CMDB

“How did your team keep the CMDB accurate, and how did you know how accurate it was?”

Adjacent, but not real signal

These read as related, but they don’t tell you this candidate can do this job — they usually belong to one of the roles below.

  • L1/L2/L3 Support

How IT support is split by depth. L1 (the help desk or service desk) takes the first call and fixes common issues from a script; L2 handles problems that need hands-on technical work; L3 is the specialists or developers who fix the root cause in the system or code.

  • Helpdesk Tools (Zendesk, Freshdesk)

Software that support teams use to receive, track and answer customer or employee requests as tickets: Zendesk and Freshdesk for customer support, Freshservice and Jira Service Management for internal IT.

  • Jira

The most widely used project-tracking tool for Agile teams — sprint boards, backlogs, and issue tracking — from Atlassian.

Most often confused with

  • ServiceNow Administrator
  • Salesforce Developer

Builds custom features on Salesforce with code: Apex for business logic, Lightning Web Components for screens, SOQL for data, and integrations with other systems. Different from a Salesforce Administrator, who configures the platform with clicks, and from a functional consultant, who designs how the business should use it.
