Build a Closing Plan for a Candidate

When to use it

The prompt

Help me build a closing plan for a candidate we're about to make an offer to. CANDIDATE: {{Job Title}}, currently at {{company type}} WHAT THEY'VE TOLD ME MATTERS TO THEM: {{quote them as closely as you can — comp, scope, team, learning, stability, remote, manager, mission}} WHY THEY'RE LOOKING: {{what they've said about their current role}} OTHER PROCESSES IN PLAY: {{companies, stages, any deadlines}} OUR OFFER: {{comp, level, team, start date}} WHERE WE'RE GENUINELY STRONG AND WEAK AGAINST THEIR ALTERNATIVES: {{be honest}} WHO ELSE INFLUENCES THE DECISION: {{a partner, family, a mentor, a current manager they're loyal to}} Give me: 1. The two or three things most likely to decide this for them, ranked, based on what they've said rather than what usually motivates people. 2. What I don't know yet and need to ask before the offer goes out, and how to ask it. 3. Who on our side should speak to them before the offer lands, about what specifically, and in what order. 4. The objection to expect, and how to handle it without over-promising. 5. What a counter-offer from their current employer would likely look like, and what to say now, before it arrives, so it lands differently when it does. 6. A day-by-day plan from offer to signature: who contacts them, when, and what each touch is for. 7. What I must not do: promise anything I haven't cleared, invent a deadline, or push in a way that makes a yes fragile. If their own stated priorities point to the other option being the better fit for them, say so.

Tip

Do the counter-offer conversation before the offer, not after. Once someone has a retention counter in hand, you're arguing against a concrete number instead of against a decision they've already reasoned through.

How to use it

Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
