Draft a Job Description

When to use it

The prompt

Act as a technical recruiter who has written job descriptions that actually convert. Write a job description for a {{Job Title}} role at {{Company Name}}. CONTEXT FROM THE HIRING MANAGER: {{paste raw notes, requirements, a previous JD, or the intake call transcript — messy is fine}} WHAT THIS PERSON WILL ACTUALLY WORK ON IN THEIR FIRST SIX MONTHS: {{if known}} TEAM AND REPORTING LINE: {{size, who they report to, who they work with}} WORK MODEL: {{onsite / hybrid with N days / remote, and from where}} COMP: {{range, or "not disclosing" — say which}} Write: 1. A 2-3 sentence opening that leads with the work, not with how great the company is. 2. "What you'll do" — 5-7 bullets, each a real responsibility rather than a restated skill. 3. "What you'll bring" — split explicitly into must-haves (5 maximum) and nice-to-haves. If my notes give you more than 5 must-haves, tell me which ones you demoted and why. 4. A short, honest note on comp, benefits and work model. Then, separately from the JD itself: 5. Flag any requirement that names a specific tool where a category of skill would do, and give me the broader wording. 6. Tell me which single requirement is most likely to cost me qualified applicants relative to what it actually buys. 7. Name anything in my notes you had to guess at, so I can go back and check rather than publish an invention. Plain, inclusive language. Under 500 words for the JD itself. No "rockstar", "ninja", "fast-paced" or "wear many hats".

Tip

Paste the hiring manager's raw notes as-is. Messier input gives the model more to organize, which reliably beats a tidy summary you wrote first — your summary has already thrown away the detail that would have made the JD specific.

How to use it

Paste the prompt into ChatGPT, Claude or whichever assistant you use, then replace every {{bracketed}} part with your own detail. The more specific and messier your input, the better the output — a model given raw notes has more to work with than one given a tidy summary you wrote first.
