Credible resume terms

Terms that should plausibly appear on a real Embedded Software Engineer resume. “Must-have” marks the ones whose total absence is a genuine red flag.

  • Embedded SystemsMust-have

Software written for a dedicated device rather than a general-purpose computer: a car's braking unit, a pacemaker, a thermostat, a router.

  • C (Programming Language)Must-have

A low-level language from the early 1970s that still runs underneath almost everything: operating systems, device firmware, databases and the interpreters for languages like Python.

  • C++

A high-performance, low-level language giving direct control over memory, widely used in game engines, embedded systems, high-frequency trading, and other places where speed and control matter more than developer convenience.

  • RTOSMust-have

A small operating system for devices that must respond within a guaranteed time, such as airbag controllers, industrial robots and medical devices.

  • Embedded Linux

Running Linux on devices such as routers, set-top boxes, car infotainment and industrial controllers.

  • Linux

An open-source operating system that runs the vast majority of servers, cloud infrastructure, and containers — comfort with its command line is assumed baseline for most backend and DevOps work, even when the day-to-day IDE is on Windows or Mac.

  • CAN Bus

The network that lets the electronic control units in a car (engine, brakes, airbags) talk to each other over shared wires.

  • AUTOSAR

A standard software architecture for car electronics, agreed by carmakers and suppliers so software parts can be reused across vehicles and suppliers.

  • Functional Safety (ISO 26262)

The safety discipline for car electronics. ISO 26262 sets how to analyse what could go wrong and prove the software and hardware handle it, rated by risk level from ASIL A to D, with D the strictest.

  • IoT

Networks of physical devices (sensors, meters, trackers, smart appliances) that send data to the cloud and receive commands back.

  • Bluetooth Low Energy

The low-power version of Bluetooth (introduced in 2010) that phones use to talk to nearby devices: fitness trackers, smartwatches, medical devices, smart locks, car accessories and other IoT hardware.

  • Git

The standard tool for tracking changes to code over time and enabling multiple people to collaborate on the same codebase without overwriting each other's work.

Embedded Software Engineer: screening questions

One question per core skill, must-haves first. Each term’s page shows what a junior and a senior answer sound like.

  1. Embedded Systems

“What hardware did your code run on, and how did you debug it when you couldn't just print to a screen?”

  2. C (Programming Language)

“Tell me about the hardest memory bug you've tracked down in C. How did you find it?”

  3. RTOS

“What was a timing deadline your system had to meet, and how did you prove it met it?”

  4. Embedded Linux

“Have you written a device driver or brought Linux up on a new board? What broke first?”

  5. AUTOSAR

“Did you work on Classic or Adaptive AUTOSAR, and which layer: application components, the runtime, or basic software configuration?”

Adjacent, but not real signal

These read as related, but they don’t tell you this candidate can do this job — they usually belong to one of the roles below.

  • Verilog / SystemVerilog / VHDL

Languages for describing digital chip circuits rather than writing software: engineers describe how a circuit behaves, and tools turn that into real logic gates.

  • RTL Design

The front-end chip design step: writing a circuit's behaviour at register-transfer level in Verilog or VHDL, defining how data moves between registers on each clock cycle.

  • PLC / SCADA

The control systems of factories, power plants and water works.

Most often confused with

  • VLSI Design Engineer

Designs the logic inside a chip — RTL in Verilog or SystemVerilog that becomes an ASIC or runs on an FPGA. Indian JDs often call this front-end design; physical design (layout and timing) is a separate back-end role.

  • PLC / Automation Engineer
