Ionic / Capacitor
Also written as Ionic, Capacitor, Cordova, Apache Cordova, PhoneGap, Hybrid Apps
Tools that wrap a web app (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) inside a native app shell, so web developers can ship to the app stores. Cordova (formerly PhoneGap) was the original; Capacitor, from the Ionic team, is its modern replacement. Cheaper and faster to build than native, but can feel less smooth than a fully native or React Native app.
Think of it like
Putting a website in a picture frame shaped like an app: it hangs in the app store, but it's still a website inside.
Junior or senior?
Usually a web developer who has shipped mobile apps, not a native mobile developer.
Senior sounds like
Can say when they had to write native plugin code, and where the web-in-a-wrapper approach fell short.
Ask them
“Where did the web-based approach fall short in your app, and did you have to write any native code to fix it?”
Reading Ionic / Capacitor on a resume
- Table-stakes
- Most people in this field list Ionic / Capacitor, so its presence tells you little, and opening a screen with it can make the call sound junior. Ask what they built with it instead.
